japanese b-ball

A three-on-three tournament outside of Nagoya Station, with some promising looking young ladies in action for this photo.
However, upon returning to watch some tournament action the next day, an ex-pat told me the games had been canceled, due to an earlier rain. And in place of the games, they were having a free-throw shooting contest. I suggested that a three-point contest would have been a much better idea, since there’s nothing at all interesting about watching people shoot free- throws, for what I am guessing would have been no less than a couple of hours. I mean, someone can stand up there and drain 10 free throws in a row, but how exciting is that really going to be?
As I left, I noticed one guy shooting old-school style, lobbing them up from knee-high with both hands. Let’s just hope it was some kind of protest.

Continuing with the hoops theme, when I recently asked about somewhere I could play ball, I was advised not to show up without a team. Although, this structured mentality has its benefits, I ask you, what would Kobe, Lebron, Iverson, or Carmelo be without the ‘pick-up’ game? Walking into a gym, or onto a playground, calling “next,” running with at least a couple of dudes you have never met, trying to hold the court for as many runs as possible, that’s where ‘game’ is born.

  1. Dude, they’re just thinking up excuses for you not to thrash them. I hope you just ran out onto the court these little girls are playing on and stuffed a shot back in one of their faces! “Bam! I’m from America!”

    That’s how you do it.
