Sound Strategy - New EP Buy on iTunes
So, the highly anticipated follow-up (at least in my mind) to Natural Hunger has finally arrived! The album is titled Sound Strategy. Artistically, I believe this project has been approached with a ’sound strategy,’ in other words, a good conception, and at the same time, I emphasize ’sound strategy,’ to distinguish the approach through music.
This project started around two and a half years ago, with myself on keys, vocals, and programming,Tobias Kaemmerer on trumpet and Raphael Crawford on trombone. At that time, I envisioned electronic beats and textures, vocals and brass. Over time, the trio allowed me to discover the direction of this group. As the music evolved, I wanted a more organic feel. We needed to open it up a little more, so I asked Jess Birch to join on drums. The impact was tremendous, and immediately, we knew this was the right move. As time went on, Bob Lovecchio would sometimes perform with the group, but it proved difficult to find a steady bass player who was the right fit. This is why I also called on the talents of Lorin Cohen for the album.
In selecting which music would be recorded, I tried to choose the most natural, forward-thinking music. And I discovered that during the recording process, the music took another step forward. The sound progressed to “Balance,” the final song recorded.
Performing live, I had been singing the first line, “Balance as I walk through the city streets,” then improvising on lyrical sketches. However, after writing lyrics over 5/4 in the first six bars of “Off-Speed,” I was ready to write the lyrics to “Balance,” expanding and tightening the lyrical flow.
Having invested so much financial and creative energy, I naturally wish for the success of this album. With an optimism tempered by reality, I hope it is not too much to imagine that this music will be accessible enough to reach its audience, cutting through the plague of attention deficiency, to both inspire and stimulate awareness.
